Scientific report
The EUROMECH Colloquium 597 on Reduced Order Modeling in Mechanics of Materials hosted a total of around 40 people including guest speakers for particular slots. The scientific aim of relating model order reduction, data-driven modeling and simulation and error estimation was fully achieved due to the very high quality of the 33 oral presentations and the impressive number of 14 accompanying posters which were extensively discussed during a seperate time slot. Two keynote lectures were included into the program in order to accentuate the fields of multiscale simulations (presentation by Prof. Stefanie Reese and co-workers) and data-driven simulations (presentation by Prof. Ivan Oseledets and co-workers). In addition to the 33 presentations an external invitee from the University of Stuttgart, Dr. Andrea Beck, showcased the application of machine learning for the treatment of turbulent flow. This was the opener for an open discussion slot which ended up into many intense small group discussions.
The feedback given by the guests was overwhelming and, therefore, the organizers conclude that the event was successful in bringing into contact scientist across Europe and beyond. The audience consisted of well-balanced mix of master and doctoral students, post-docs and established professors. Our personal perception was that the communication barrier within the group was very low which led to many interesting in-depth discussions.
Among the 39 inscribed participants were 9 EUROMECH members. Out of the remaining 30 persons a total of 12 persons selected the option "I want to become a member", i.e. the EUROMECH community can potentially be strengthened by the new members.
A special issue in "Mathematics and Computational Applications" entitled "Machine Learning, Low-Rank Approximations and Reduced Order Modeling in Computational Mechanics" is guest edited by the two conference chairs. Several participants of the colloquium committed for submitting a manuscript to the special issue.
The chairpersons decided to definitely propose a follow-up workshop (also in the spirit of their previous workshops WORM2013, WORM2014 and WORM2016) with the particular objective of maintaining consistency in continuity in the participants.
The chairpersons highly acknowledge EUROMECH's financial support which helped in keeping the colloquium fee at a very low rate while still allowing for full on-site coverage.
